SINGAPORE — The Republic’s water polo team kicked off their SEA Games campaign with a 19-4 victory over Malaysia at the OCBC Aquatics Centre today.

The Singaporeans were dominant in the first quarter as they scored six goals but the Malaysians rallied in the second quarter, limiting the host nation to just one goal. Team Singapore regained their goal-scoring form in the last two quarters, scoring 12 to see out the game.

Goalkeeper Nigel Tay was a standout performer today with his incisive passes, many of which led to goals. However, the 28-year old felt that his team’s defence could have been better.

“Obviously there were a few defensive lapses here and there. However, our teams are stronger tactically, physically and technically,” said Tay who is taking part in his fifth SEA Games. “There is no pressure for me. I am quietly confident (we can retain the gold medal).”

National coach Lee Sai Meng said that there were a few areas of their game that needed improvement — particularly in front of goal as he felt the second quarter demonstrated how his side at times lacked the killer touch.

“I think they have to be sharper, especially in front of goal. They (Malaysia) actually slowed us down (in second quarter). Tomorrow morning, I will get them to do a bit of drills to refresh their memories before the game against Thailand.” said the 38-year-old.

The women’s water polo team beat Indonesia 7-4 yesterday in their opening fixture and will face Malaysia tomorrow while the men’s team will play Thailand tomorrow night.
