SINGAPORE — The march towards a gold medal continued for the Singapore women’s water polo team who routed the Philippines 20-2 at the OCBC Aquatic Centre this afternoon (June 13).
The home side scored through Angeline Teo (5), Adelyn Yew (5), Lynnette Tan (3), Denise Chen (2) and Lim Wen Xin, Ng Yi Wen, Sheryl Tan, Loke En Yuan, Wu Zhekang, who contributed a goal each. The Philippines replied through Bea Felise Garrido and Carla Beatriz Grabador.
The onslaught started early in match when centre-forward Yew opened the floodgates for the host nation to race to a 10-1 lead before the eight-minute first quarter was up.
The Filipinas tightened their play from the second quarter onwards, restricting Singapore to 10 goals in the remaining quarters, but failed to narrow the huge gap. They only found the net for a second time through Grabador in the 18th minute of play.
Singapore now lead the round-robin competition with six points, ahead of Thailand, who have four but with a game in hand.
The Thais are expected to beat the Philippines tomorrow to set the stage for a showdown with Singapore for the gold on Monday.
Singapore are also primed to continue their unbroken dominance and 26th gold in the men’s competition. They lead the five-nation competition and will face the Philippines tomorrow before wrapping up their campaign against second-place Indonesia on Tuesday.
