After a 10-year absence, nobody knew what to expect when the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series finally made its return to Singapore over the weekend.
But, with close to 30,000 tickets sold and fans seen lapping up the carnival-like atmosphere over the past two days at the National Stadium, the Singapore Sevens has been deemed a success by Singapore Rugby Union (SRU) president Low Teo Ping.
“It’s been a long journey, this (Singapore Sevens) has been two years in the making,” Low said after last night’s Cup final between Kenya and Fiji. “We got great support from the Government, volunteers and World Rugby, so I can’t ask for more this year.
“The record turnout by the fans also confirms that we need to do a much better job next year, so that they will keep coming back. It also helps that an underdog team like Kenya won, because this upset is going to be well-remembered. It’s good for rugby here in Singapore, and I’m really pleased overall.” NOAH TAN
