SINGAPORE — World No 1 ranked doubles pair Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis trounced Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0, 6-3 to lift the doubles trophy at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore today (Nov 1).

India’s Mirza and her Swiss partner Hingis — who paired up only this March — took just 66 minutes to beat the Spanish pair of Muguruza and Suarez Navarro to extend their 22-match unbeaten streak.

Mirza and Hingis dominated the match at the Singapore Indoor Stadium with their powerful groundstrokes and chemistry on court, and handed the Spaniards an embarrassing “bagel” in the first set. Only a late surge from Muguruza and Suarez Navarro averted a unprecedented double bagel at the WTA Finals, but it was too little too late as they went down 6-3 in the second set.

Hingis was full of praise for her doubles partner Mirza after the win.

“Sania just played out of her mind today,” gushed the Swiss. “She was hitting up the line, she was on my side, behind me, and just everywhere … And playing beautiful tennis.”

Their vanquished opponents conceded they were simply outclassed.

“Sania and Martina, now I know why you’re No 1,” said Suarez Navarro. “Today was really tough. They play an amazing match. You know, when they play like that, it’s so tough to win.”
