SINGAPORE — Football fans who are StarHub TV subscribers will be able to enjoy the full season of the Uefa Champions League and Uefa Europa League, after the cable television operator secured the rights to screen all matches from both competitions.
Meanwhile, rival Singtel TV said, in response to media queries, that it is putting the “finishing touches” to its own deal, which will be announced soon.
In a statement on Sunday (Sept 30), StarHub said the move will come for its Sports Group subscribers “at no extra cost”.
The matches will be broadcast live on its beIN SPORTS HD channel (StarHub TV Channel 213) with simultaneous matches shown on StarHub’s self-packaged Hub Sports channels.
StarHub TV Sports Group subscribers with StarHub TV Go Value-Added Service can also catch the live matches on their smart devices at their own convenience.
“We are happy to reach an agreement to bring this season of the Uefa Champions League and Uefa Europa League to our customers,” said Mr Johan Buse, StarHub’s Chief of Consumer Business Group.
“We are grateful for our customers’ understanding and thank them for their patience during this period. We remain committed to ensuring that our content offering provides customers with a wide range of sporting events.”
Responding to TODAY’s queries, a Singtel spokesperson said: “Singtel TV and beIN SPORTS are putting the finishing touches to a deal to air Uefa Champions League and Europa League.
“Our priority is for our customers to continue enjoying the live coverage for both competitions,” the spokesperson added.
The latest announcements come nearly two weeks after Singtel announced a last-ditch deal to broadcast five matches of the Uefa Champions League, barely three hours before the matches kicked off.
StarHub had not managed to secure the rights to air those matches then.
The Champions League is Europe’s most prestigious club competition, with the finals this year to be played in the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid. The Europa League is the second top ranking tournament in European club football with the finals to be held at the Olympic Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Singapore’s football fans were able to catch Uefa Champions League and Europa League matches on both Singtel and StarHub in the last three years because Eurosport — owned by Discovery Communications — won the exclusive media rights to the competitions for a three-year window and made them available to both Singtel and StarHub.
As of August this year, Singtel and StarHub no longer carry Eurosport.
Both operators are carrying out separate negotiations for this season's media rights. ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY ASYRAF KAMIL
