BERLIN — Acer will unveil its 6-inch Liquid S2 smartphone at IFA 2013, featuring a 13-megapixel rear camera and the ability to record ‘Ultra HD’ viideo.

The Taiwanese company claims that the Liquid S2 is the world’s first smartphone capable of shooting 4K video, which is four times the resolution of current full HD. However, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 smartphone — also launching this week at IFA — is rumoured to offer the same capability.

Acer’s Liquid S2 device is clearly aimed at keen video-makers and photographers. The rear camera boasts a 28mm lens, a BSI sensor and an LED ring flash, offering up to 27 megapixels in a single picture. This is paired with a 2 megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera, allowing users to capture moments with an 88-degree wide viewing angle.

A “quick first shot” feature lets users take pictures directly from the unlock screen and adjust focus and exposure later, while “smart best shot” automatically detects photo type and takes multiple shots for best selection. There is also a “favorite mode”, which lets users create up to five profiles with customised effects, flash, capture mode and scenes.

Beyond the camera, the Liquid S2 is unquestionably Acer’s highest specification smartphone device to date, with a 6-inch 1920x1080 resolution full HD 1080p touchscreen, a quad-core 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and Google’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean mobile operating system, as well as 2GB of RAM.

It comes with the latest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ac, and 4G LTE support, which means that the handset is capable of reaching upload speeds of 150Mbps.

The Liquid S2 also has 16GB of internal storage expandable up to 128GB via microSD card, allowing users to store a large library of photos, music and videos, and a 3,300mAh battery.

Acer said that the Liquid S2, which is available in red or black, will go on sale in Europe towards the end of October. Exact pricing and availability will be announced at a later stage. THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
