Supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice should be lauded for allowing family members of our Pioneer Generation to shop at its outlets on their behalf and enjoy discounts without the elderly Pioneer Generation member being present.

I would like to encourage NTUC FairPrice and other supermarket chains, such as Sheng Siong, to go further.

They should extend these privileges to the family members of our Merdeka Generation, who are between 61 and 70 years old this year.

While members of the Merdeka Generation are younger than our Pioneer Generation, they, too, are senior citizens and thus more vulnerable to Covid-19.

We should, therefore, also allow younger relatives of our Merdeka Generation to shop on their behalf and enjoy discounts by producing their family member’s Merdeka Generation card.
