Enforce traffic laws against errant heavy-vehicle drivers
From Mervyn Lim Ding Yan
I refer to the online report, “Education Ministry to step up road safety education in light of Tampines accident” (Jan 29).
While it is important to impart correct road safety values to our pupils, the Government’s efforts cannot merely stop there.
During off-peak hours, it is not uncommon to see heavy vehicles speeding on the second or even first lane of expressways such as the Pan-Island Expressway and Kranji Expressway.
Not only does this pose a threat to other motorists, some drivers may carry on their errant driving habits on normal roads. The relevant authorities should enforce the traffic laws more actively against these errant drivers.
There should be more frequent expressway and road patrols during off-peak hours, and defensive driving courses should be made compulsory, if this is not already so. The Tampines accident is a tragedy, one that could well have been avoided.
