In recent years, Singaporean audiences are showing a greater interest in locally-produced films. Home-grown film makers, Eric Khoo, Roystan Tan and Michelle Chong have done well as they have the ability to relate to the local audiences.
It is true that the hype created by its success at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival has a positive impact on Ilo Ilo, but that does not necessarily mean that Singaporeans would support it less if it had not won the award.
Film-makers and audiences need the support of the media, especially at this juncture where the standard of our local producers, directors and actors is improving steadily. Featuring such films in the media helps inform audiences.
