The boatmen of Ubin
03:23 Min
The rough and gruff "Ubin boatmen" have been ferrying visitors from mainland Singapore to Pulau Ubin for decades.
Last week however, the community found their peaceful existence disturbed when ex-City Harvest Church leader Chew Eng Han’s allegedly attempted to flee to Malaysia on a fishing boat from Ubin.
With most of them in their 60s and 70s, the future of the trade is uncertain. Although some have embraced technology, like social media marketing, to boost business, the lack of fresh blood willing to learn the ropes could spell the end of the Ubin boatmen as we know them.
