LAHAD DATU — Another elephant was found dead at a plantation area in Sabah on Monday (Dec 9) morning.

Sabah Wildlife director Augustine Tuuga confirmed that the pachyderm carcass was found at Bakapit near here.

"We will give (further) information after post-mortem," he replied the New Straits Times in a WhatsApp message.

It was reported that the elephant was found by a plantation worker at about 6.30am.

The Wildlife Department personnel had gone to the site to investigate upon receiving information on the discovery.

To date, there have been more than 20 elephant deaths reported this year which were either caused by poaching, the elephants killing each other and natural causes.

The Sabah government had said during a recent elephant experts meeting that it was crucial for humans and elephants to coexist together.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew, who is also Malaysia's State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, had also stated that there would be meetings with stakeholders on the wildlife sanctuary in Lower Kinabatangan to solve the human-elephant conflict. NEW STRAITS TIMES
