LONDON — Arsenal have sacked manager Unai Emery following a run of seven games without a victory, turning to their former midfielder Freddie Ljungberg to take over as interim coach, the Premier League club announced on Friday (Nov 29).

Spaniard Emery leaves the side after 18 months in charge, with the club eighth in the Premier League standings after four wins in 13 matches.

"The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required," the Gunners said in a statement.

"We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward."

Arsenal have recorded just four wins from 13 Premier League matches and are sitting in eighth spot in the table on 18 points, eight behind Chelsea, the team occupying the fourth Champions League spot.

The final straw appears to be Thursday's 1-2 defeat at home against German side Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League.

Arsenal travel to third-from-bottom Norwich on Sunday. AGENCIES
