KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian King Al-Sultan Abdullah has once again reminded politicians to stop playing politics as the country struggles with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said in a statement that the Malaysian king is concerned about the country’s political climate.

“In relation to the latest developments in the country’s political situation, his majesty advised the people, especially politicians, to be thoughtful so that the country is never again dragged into an uncertain political arena while we are faced with various problems and a difficult future due to the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

The Malaysian king also warned politicians not to forsake the well-being of the people, but to be matured in their decision-making. 

The Malaysian king added that politicians should not resolve matters with animosity toward each other, rather amicably through negotiations.

“His majesty stressed that politicians should not end disagreements with hostility but instead resolve problems through consultation and legal processes that are enshrined in the federal constitution,” the statement read.

The Malaysian king also urged all Malaysians to say a prayer asking for the peace and prosperity of the country to always be protected.

On Tuesday (Oct 13), opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim met the Malaysian king at the Istana Negara to present the list of Malaysian MPs who allegedly support him.

Shortly after the meeting, Istana Negara said in a statement that Mr Anwar only submitted the number of MPs supporting him but did not submit their names.

The Malaysian king also advised Mr Anwar to abide by and respect the legal processes as enshrined in the federal constitution, the statement said.

At the same time, Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin also appeared to have lost the support of his allies in United Malays National Organisation (Umno).

Umno, feeling sidelined and bullied by Bersatu, is seeking a better deal in Perikatan Nasional, failing which it said it will reconsider its support for the ruling pact.

Mr Muhyiddin is set to meet with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Malaysian Islamic Party president Abdul Hadi Awang by this weekend to sort out their differences.

At the same time, Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah also appeared to be working behind the scenes to form a unity government. THE MALAYSIAN INSIGHT
