SINGAPORE — A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight ferrying 190 passengers from Dhaka to Singapore made an emergency landing in Myanmar due to a faulty engine on Wednesday (Feb 7).

SIA told TODAY that flight SQ449 suffered from "a technical issue with one of the aircraft's engines" during the journey and was forced to divert to Mandalay.

Singapore's flagship carrier said that the Airbus A330 arrived in Mandalay at around 3.32pm local time on Wednesday, when it was originally scheduled to arrive in Singapore at 7.05pm on the same day.

Singapore is one and a half hours ahead of the second-largest city in Myanmar.

"As engineers on (the) ground require time to address the technical issue, a replacement aircraft will be deployed to Mandalay to transport passengers and crew to Singapore," the carrier said.

SIA said that a replacement aircraft departed for Mandalay from Singapore at 10.21pm.

The carrier estimates the plane to depart Mandalay early on Thursday at 1.10am local time to begin the journey back to the Republic with the stranded passengers and crew.

It is expected to arrive in Singapore at 6.05am, more than 10 hours behind schedule.

Wednesday's incident makes it the second such time this year that SIA was forced to divert one of its flights. On Jan 4, SQ26 was forced to divert its flight from Frankfurt bound for the John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York to the Stewart International Airport (SWF), some 128km north, due to Winter Storm Grayson.
