LONDON — Authorities responded to multiple attacks in London on Saturday night (June 3).

WHAT WE KNOW

• Six people were killed in a terrorist attack in the London Bridge and Borough Market areas of London. The police said that three suspected attackers wearing fake explosive vests had been shot and killed.

• The attackers drove a vehicle onto the sidewalk on London Bridge, striking several pedestrians, at around 10 pm, according to London’s Metropolitan Police Service.

• The police said the vehicle was then driven to nearby Borough Market, where the suspects got out and began stabbing people, including an on-duty British Transport Police officer who was responding to the scene at London Bridge. The police said he sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.

• The police said they shot and killed the three male suspects in Borough Market within eight minutes of receiving the first report of an incident on London Bridge. The suspects were wearing what the police determined to be fake explosive vests.

• Mr Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, called the attacks “a deliberate and cowardly attack on innocent Londoners and visitors to our city enjoying their Saturday night”.

• The police urged people to evacuate the area or shelter in place while they responded to the attacks. Video of officers instructing patrons at a restaurant to hide under their tables spread online and on news channels.

• The London Ambulance Service said that it had taken 48 patients to five hospitals across the city.

• London Bridge was shut down after the attack. The British Transport Police said on Twitter that it would remain closed all night. The police asked people to avoid the area around both London Bridge and Borough Market.

• London police said they also responded to a third incident, a stabbing, near Vauxhall, an area some distance from London Bridge and Borough Market. That incident was believed to have been unrelated to the terrorist attacks.

• A White House spokesman said that President Donald Trump had been briefed by his national security aides on the events in London but that US officials did not have any details beyond the media reports.

• Mr Trump sent out multiple messages on Twitter about Saturday’s event. One expressed the country’s support while another appeared to leverage the incident as evidence for the need for his so-called travel ban.

WHAT WE DON’T KNOW

• The identities of the three dead attackers were not immediately released. We do not know what organisation, if any, they were affiliated with.

• We do not know the identities of the people killed in the attack.

• We do not know if these attacks were related to the suicide bombing in Manchester late last month, which killed 23 people, including the bomber.

• We do not know what weapons were used in these attacks, although there were reports of at least one man with a knife.
