KUALA LUMPUR — A Malaysian teenager was killed in a skateboarding accident while on holiday in Townsville in Queensland, Australia, on Saturday (Dec 28).

Mohammad Farhan Fudhail Mohammad Farid, 16, from Kuantan, Pahang, had been skateboarding downhill at 2.30pm when he slammed into a roadside pole in Jezzine Barracks, North Ward, Australian media reported.

According to Bernama, it is understood that he had been trying to slow his skateboard down before the crash.

The teenager, who had been wearing a safety helmet, was in critical condition when paramedics arrived at the scene. It is not yet clear at what point Mohammad Farhan Fudhail died.

Mohammad Farhan Fudhail was reportedly in Australia with other family members to visit his mother, who worked as a nurse there.

His mother, Ms Furhzanatul Natasha Mohd Sazali, told Bernama that preparations are being made to repatriate her son's body to Malaysia.

Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob said that Wisma Putra has been in contact with Mohammad Farhan Fudhail’s family. The repatriation effort is being carried out by the High Commission of Malaysia in Canberra, he added.

"The victim’s mother is still waiting for the post-mortem results.

"The body is expected to be brought back to Malaysia via Malaysia Airlines," Mr Muhammad Shahrul said.

Bernama reported that Mohammad Farhan Fudhail's granduncle, Azahari Hassan, 47, said teen had received the skateboard as a gift a few days ago.

According to Bernama, Mr Azahari described Mohammad Farhan Fudhail as a good and hardworking boy.

"He never once raised his voice to his grandparents. He spent most of his time at home and only occasionally went out for a jog," Mr Azahari said. NEW STRAITS TIMES
