KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has left Istana Negara on Tuesday (Oct 13) following his royal audience with Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
The PKR president left the palace compound through Istana Negara's Gate 2 without speaking to the media after spending almost an hour inside.
Mr Anwar had arrived in a black Jaguar around 10.30am. Police officers had prevented the press from approaching the vehicle and palace entrance during Mr Anwar’s arrival.
He waved at the waiting press members as he drove out of the palace grounds.
Several PKR supporters who had gathered outside the palace shouted “reformasi” as the Port Dickson MP drove off.
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil told the press Mr Anwar will hold a media conference on Tuesday at 2pm.
Mr Anwar’s audience was to convince the king that he has enough support from MPs in the Dewan Rakyat to take over the running of the government from Mr Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional.
On Sept 23, Mr Anwar claimed to have enough support in the Dewan Rakyat with a “strong, convincing” majority of MPs said to be backing him in his bid to unseat the PN administration. He was unable to meet the king who was in hospital at the time.
On Monday, Malaysian police said they would summon the opposition leader in relation to a list in circulation of 121 MPs said to support him in changing the government.
Various political parties on the government bench have dismissed Mr Anwar’s claim and reiterated support for Mr Muhyiddin.
However, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he could not stop his party MPs from backing Mr Anwar should they wish to do so. AGENCIES
